School Sucks?

School Sucks?

Feelin': Restless
Hummin': Into The West - LOTR ost

I'm sure you know how much I hate school. Yes, the poster that boldly says "School Sucks" as part of my layout is a dead give-away. But as much as I believe that I do hate school, there's something in me that suddenly contradicts. But first, let me give you a short history on how I became one of the students who hate school the most.

So the theory I will now call "Grades Depend On Teachers" will now be put to use. I have had the WORST teachers in Ateneo. Name the weirdos who'll bore you 'til death, and I'm sure I've gotten through many of them. Enumerate the most unreasonable professors who seems to derive pleasure from squirming students and I'll give you a handful of names from my own personal experience.

I do not claim that these teachers are the only cause of my pathetic grades, but admittedly, they have been a major part of it. When others have a breeze for a Filipino class, I was sent out for being late without hearing the reason that my nose was bleeding. I have received a wrong grade which was at least a letter lower than what I'm supposed to receive, but couldn't ask for a change because my teacher has gone off to U.K. With experiences like these, you're sure to learn important skills on surviving Ateneo.

You will LEARN how to choose teachers on HOW THEY GRADE and not HOW THEY TEACH. You will LEARN to choose teachers on HOW THEY TREAT students rather than HOW MUCH YOU LEARN. That is one of the most valuable teachings I share to naive students who seem to follow my lead. I am sure you can feel the heat surging from these unwanted memories, so you're probably wondering why the change of mind.

Well, let me put it this way. Women are fickle-minded and usually indecisive. The last time I looked, I was one, so I'm using this as logical reasoning. Hehehe.

I'm taking up History 165 (History of Rizal-Phil. National Hero) and Comm160 (Advertising Principles and Practices) this summer. I've complained about not having enough summer breaks for so many times, I'm sure you're getting tired of it. But after a few classes on these subjects, I find myself not just interested, but EAGER to go to class.

Yes, you have heard it right. I've grown another head and it's controlling my brain as I write this blog entry right now.

This new change of attitude can only be credited to the great and intellectually stimulating teachers I am under this summer. For History 165, I have David Lozada, one of the most interesting and animated lecturers I've ever encountered. For Comm160, I have Nanette Diyco, one of the wittiest and most intimidating teachers in existence. Because of the way they impart knowledge with a passion for the subject and in teaching, I feel the energy emulating from them and being passed onto us, the students.

For 1 and 1/2 hours daily, Sir Dave keeps us glued to educational "show" he puts up. And for a commendable 4 hour sessions with Ms. Diyco twice a week, she manages to keep me sitting upright and ears perked up, absorbing every word that comes out of her mouth. There is a certain vibe, a magnetic aura in their personas such that they encourage people to listen even without knowing about it.

If only I have teachers like these more often, school would be less of a drag and more of a fun way to spend summer.

Remember this day. This might be the only time EVER that I say this...

School has never been this much FUN!!!
